FINDING LIGHT

Natural light is never the same twice. A short study of how we read it, wait for it, and sometimes get out of its way.

FINDING LIGHT

The first hour

Early light is low, directional, and forgiving. It shapes a face without flattening it and gives colour a softness that is hard to rebuild later.

Shadow is information

We expose for the highlights and let the shadows fall. Darkness tells the viewer where to look.

Windows as instruments

A single window can be a key light, a rim, or a silhouette, depending on where you stand. We move ourselves before we move anything else.

Knowing when to stop

When the light turns, we stop. Chasing it rarely makes a better picture.
